Why CompTIA Certifications Matter in 2026
CompTIA certifications are the most common stepping stones into IT in the US, UK, and EU. Their core trio — A+, Network+, and Security+ — appear as required or strongly preferred on the majority of US Tier 1 IT, NOC, and SOC analyst job listings. Unlike vendor certs (CCNA, AWS, Microsoft), CompTIA credentials are deliberately vendor-neutral, which means the concepts transfer cleanly when you start working with whatever specific hardware or cloud your employer chose.
For early-career engineers, CompTIA certs unlock entry into roles that would otherwise require 1–3 years of experience to get past resume screening. Average US salaries in 2026 are roughly $48k–$62k for A+ holders, $58k–$72k for Network+ holders, and $72k–$95k for Security+ holders — with significant uplift when stacked together. The CompTIA Cybersecurity track (CySA+, PenTest+, SecurityX/CASP+) carries even larger premiums for mid-career security practitioners.
CompTIA also satisfies DoD 8570/8140 baseline cybersecurity requirements for US federal contractor work. If you are targeting a clearance-required role, Security+ at minimum is effectively mandatory. That regulatory footprint keeps demand stable even when the broader IT job market softens.

Which CompTIA Certification Should You Start With?
CompTIA structures its certifications as a ladder. Most candidates climb it in this order:
- Zero IT background → Tech+ (FC0-U71), then A+. Tech+ is intentionally pre-A+: it teaches the IT vocabulary you need before A+ assumes you have it.
- 6+ months of help-desk experience → start at A+ (220-1101 + 1102). Two-exam credential, broad coverage of hardware, OS, and basic networking. Foundation for everything else.
- A+ holder targeting network roles → Network+ (N10-009). Deeper networking concepts, expanded TCP/IP, VLANs, Zero Trust, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and troubleshooting methodology.
- Network+ holder targeting security roles → Security+ (SY0-701). The single most-requested CompTIA cert on US job boards. Required for DoD 8570/8140 cybersecurity roles.
- Security+ holder ready for SOC analyst work → CySA+ (CS0-003). Threat detection, SIEM analysis, incident response.
- SOC analyst targeting offensive security → PenTest+ (PT0-003). Penetration testing methodology, recon, exploitation, post-exploitation, reporting.
- Senior security engineer or architect → SecurityX (CAS-005, formerly CASP+). CompTIA's highest-tier cybersecurity cert — harder than Security+ and CySA+ combined.
- Cloud or DevOps direction → after Network+, take Cloud+ (CV0-004) and/or Linux+ (XK0-005). Both pair well with vendor cloud certs (AWS, Azure, GCP).
A practical note: do not stack three CompTIA certs in 6 months without practical work in between. The credential matters, but hiring managers look harder at portfolio projects (home labs, contribution to open-source security tools, write-ups of TryHackMe rooms) than at cert count. One cert plus real work beats three certs plus no demonstrable output.
